I heard Canon was the ideal…true??

Not an easy question to answer at all. The 'best' cameras out there cost $8,000 or more; the Canon 1Ds Mark III and the Nikon D3 are considered to be the best. You don't need either, or anything close to them.

FIRST: Don't be fooled by the megapixel hype! You don't need more than 8mp. Don't buy a small point and shoot with 10 or 12MP because you think it's superior picture quality. IT'S NOT.

You want a camera with a protective window over the LCD screen so the screen doesn't crack while the camera is in your pocket or bag. Trust me.

Don't buy a Kodak. Just don't. Nikon has decent point and shoot cameras, but there's better available for the same money.

I think Canon SD series cameras are good quality, they’re fast and simple to use. Look for one with a window over the LCD like the SD750, SD1000, SD1100 etc. I don't know what you want to spend but some of the SD series are pricey.

The Sony DSC-W series are comparable to the Canon SD series and can range in price as well. Maybe look for a W90 or W120. The Sonys are also swift and decent quality like the Canon.

I don't have much experience with newer Olympus and yes their 'weather proof' cameras are a good idea but they are definitely NOT going to protect you 100% from water or dropping the camera on the floor. I think they’re a good quality camera, I just don't have as much experience with them to rate them.

If you want a compact point and shoot the Olympus Stylus SW series cameras are awesome. They’re shockproof, waterproof and freeze proof.

The Olympus E-420 DSLR is also a great value for an SLR.

These cards are the most used by P&S cameras.

* Sony uses Memory Sticks

* Olympus uses xD cards

* All others use SD/SDHC cards

* DSLR's use CF cards, even though some entry level DSLR's also use SD/SDHC cards.

If you purchase a Sony that uses Memory Sticks, you’ll be stuck buying Sony cameras until you are willing to reinvest in SD/SDHC cards for your new brand camera Report Abuse

It sounds like your mum does not yet know about the damage. The camera will have to go in for repair they are too complicated to fix yourself. You might be covered for the damage if you have contents insurance, this might be your saving grace.

50D has higher ISO expansion

50D is Compact Flash UDMA compatible, which means it accepts the new faster CF cards, but the 40D does fine without this.

Both shoot about the same burst rate, 40D 6.5 fps 50D 6.3 fps

Both have a large buffer

You can't go wrong with either camera. The 50D is the upgrade of the 40D so it's obviously the more powerful camera, but it is also brand new and about $1500. You can find mint condition used 40D's on ebay for less than $800. It's still too early to get used 50D's.

but for your quality and buy the 40 d is probably a superior option

I love it. I took photos on vacation, of my children, grandchildren, and scenery.

I also have an Olympus point and shoot , the C-765. I’ve dropped it and bent the lens, bent it back and it still worked. Dropped it in a lake when I was fishing with hubby, retrieved it and after it dried out it still worked.

I just love Olympus !

But if I had to selected between the Canon or Nikon I would get the Nikon. Right in your budget range for both.

What gives a camera its picture quality? The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality photos. The lens and camera are very important, but the capability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great photos.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would recommend that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.

Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more pricey, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you’re making a really huge picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. http://www.Kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.j… …

The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures bigger works better on the personal. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes … like magic.
